Christi Osborne Vest for a magical four years in Hebron dominated girl’s basketball in Northern Kentucky especially in 1990 and 1991 when she helped power the Lady Cougars to an overall 66-7 record and two straight trips to the “Sweet 16.”
Her senior year at Conner she averaged 26 ppg, 8.6 rebounds, shot 64.1% from the floor and 77% from the line. She was a member of the KY junior All Stars that traveled to Europe to play as well as being a member of the KY senior All Stars. By the way, they did beat Indiana BOTH games!
During a fabulous career for Conner, Christi established herself as the All-time leading scorer with 2,612 points as well as the All-time leading rebounder with 1,058 while playing for Coach Tim Shields. She set the single game scoring record with 41 and also set not only the career field goal percentage record (56.3%) but also the one season mark (64.1%). She did all this by starting 127 consecutive varsity games.
The awards were numerous including 1991 Famous Star of the Year, the Kentucky High School Athletic Director’s Female Athlete of the Year, the J.B. Mansfield Award at the 1991 State Tournament, the Loyce Meadows Award, Northern Ky. High School Player of the Year, Enquirer Player of the Year, Ky. Post Player of the Year, NKAC Player of the Year and 9th Region Tournament MVP (1991). She was selected All-Tourney at the 1991 “Sweet 16.” She accomplished all of this while maintaining a 4.0 GPA.
Christi credits three people for being the biggest influence on her career… her dad Coach Tim Shields and Coach Beth Dunkenberger.
Osborne-Vest, after her career at Conner moved on to another great episode of her life at Virginia Tech University where she scored 1,500 career points (currently 5th all-time). She holds the VT record for career free throw percentage (83%), and was inducted into Virginia Tech’s Hall of Fame in 2006. She was a first team All-American in 1995 and Metro Conference Tournament MVP in 1994 as well as Metro Scholar Athlete of the year in both 1993 and 1994. She was also Rawlings Scholar Athlete of the Year in 1995.
Christi currently teaches preschool at Kids Academy Christian Preschool as well as being a Sunday School teacher at First Church of Christ for the past 9 years.
“I have been so blessed as a result of my participation in the sport of basketball,” says Vest. “I have met so many wonderful people and have developed many friendships.” She added “I have nothing but fond memories of both my high school and college playing days and all those who helped me along the way.”
